Zeige mir Deine Hand

und ich sage Dir was Du bist.

Jeder der ein Kind hat weiß, dass man in den ersten Monaten übermäßig oft seine Hände wäscht: Vor dem Füttern, aus hygienischen Gründen. Nach dem Füttern, weil das Baby sicher mit dem Essen rumgematscht hat. Wenn man spazieren oder in der Stadt einkaufen war, das Kind sie abgelutscht hat oder weil man selbst essen will. Es gibt der Grüne viele. Das Resultat sind natürlich trockene Hände. Meine sind so trocken, dass die Haut an den Fingerknöcheln regelmäßig reißt.

Dagegen kann man natürlich einfach ebenso regelmäßig die Hände eincremen.

Es ist nicht so, dass ich keine Handcreme besäße. Ich habe Tuben, Tiegel, Dosen und Spender über das ganze Haus verteilt. Viel Arbeit wäre es also nicht und in praktisch jedem Zimmer (außer dem Heizungsraum und dem Wäschekeller) steht eine Cremetube. Ich tue es trotzdem nicht. Warum? Ganz einfach. Mit frisch eingecremten Händen kann man nicht stricken. Egal was ich versucht habe, es geht nicht. Der Faden klebt an der Hand, die Spannung stimmt nicht und das Garn wird auch noch dreckig. Und bis meine Hände wieder einsatzbereit sind, muss ich bestimmt schon das nächste Mal Hände waschen, weil das Baby Hunger hat oder die Blase drückt.

Ich habe schon die verschiedensten Sorten Handcreme ausprobiert und die interessantesten Ergebnisse gehabt. Ganz egal ob die Creme aus dem Supermarkt, der Drogerie, einer teuren Parfümerie oder sogar der Apotheke stammt. Sie alle machen die Hände entweder klebrig oder so glitschig, dass das Kind ganz schnell Flummi spielt, wenn man es aufzunehmen versucht. Einige Marken waren so stark parfümiert, dass ich mich nach dem eincremen auf dem Fußboden des Badezimmers wiederfand und gar nicht wusste, wie ich da wohl hingekommen bin – bis ich an der Dose roch. Wieder andere zogen zwar schnell ein – hatten aber keinen weiteren Effekt auf die Trockenheit der Hände.

Da nun meine Strickzeit recht eng bemessen ist zwischen Babys Hunger, Spielwunsch, vollen Windeln und Waschmaschine bin ich viel zu geizig, davon auch nur eine Minute zu verschwenden, um meine Hände zu pflegen.

Aber ich weiß, irgendwo da draußen gibt es sie, die Handcreme die sofortiges Weiterstricken erlaubt. Die gut riecht, bezahlbar ist und dazu ihren Daseinszweck wirklich erfüllt. Ich muss sie nur finden!

Just cruising

My parents made a long-cherished wish come true and bought a motorbike about one and a half years ago, a BMW RT1100 (for my father - only BMW :D ). They are planning on cruising Scandinavia next year and this summer will conquer the alps. As the cases (top and side) are quite heavy and actually needed to hold the helmets when having a break, they asked me to sew some bags to go with the cases. For the side cases bags are available for quite a lot of cash. But the top case has up to now been virtually bagless.

Meine Eltern haben sich vor etwa anderthalb Jahren einen langgehegten Traum erfüllt und ein Motorrad gekauft, eine BMW RT1100 (für meinen Vater nur BMW :D ). Sie wollen im nächsten Jahr nach Skandinavien fahren, in diesem Sommer geht es in die Alpen. DA die Koffer am Motorrad recht schwer sind und eigentlich benötigt werden um unterwegs z.B. die Helme unterbringen zu können, haben sie mich gebeten ihnen passende Taschen zu nähen. Für die Seitenkoffer gibt es sowas - ziemlich teuer. Aber für das Topcase gibt es sowas noch gar nicht.

I bought the supplies at the fabulous www.funfabric.com Online Store by Rosa Meyer - Straps, Zippers, Clasps etc. The fabric, a lightweight Cordura came from Stoff am Stück.

Meine Zutaten habe ich im großartigen Shop von Rosa Meyer gekauft, bei www.funfabric.com, die Gurte, Bodennägel, Reißverschlüsse etc. Der Stoff, ein leichter Cordura stammt von Stoff am Stück.

I took some time to think about practicability, what I could do without patterns or proper dimensions and created simple rectangular bags with TimTex Bottom for the side cases.

Ich musste eine Weile darüber nachdenken, was denn jetzt sowohl für mich beim Nähen machbar als auch im Gebrauch praktisch war. Ich hatte keine Schnitte und nicht mal vernünftige Abmessungen. Also habe ich für die Seitenkoffer einfache rechteckige Taschen mit festem TimTex-Boden genäht.

As the cases are slightly rhomboid, I mirrored this form in the bags and marked the higher corner with my label - my parents did know this but managed none the less to take pictures of the bags on the wrong case ;) Still fit in there, anyway.

Da die Koffer auf einer Seite etwas höher sind, habe ich diese Form in die Tasche übernommen und die höhere Seite mit meinem Label markiert. Für das Bild haben meine Eltern sie falschrum ins Motorrad gepackt - funktioniert auch ;).

For the top case I created a simple rectangle, quite big, with a soft bottom and strap to carry over the shoulder. The top case is not rectangular itself but cut irregular so a soft bag meeting the largest proportion of the case proofed best. I don't have a pic of this bag yet - but will present one as soon as possible.

Für das Topcase habe ich nach längerer Überlegung eine einfache rechteckige Form ohne alles weitere gewählt, das TopCase hat ein ziemlich abgefahrenes Innenleben und entspricht keiner geometrischen Form für die ich Nähen möchte. Diese Tasche kommt ohne Verstärkung aus, damit sie sich der seltsamen Form gut anpassen kann. Bisher habe ich noch kein Bild, leider, aber ich werde eines einfügen, sobald ich es habe.

I had quite some fun sewing these bags, something completely different from what I usually create. My parents tested them a week ago and claim them to be perfect :)

Ich hatte viel Spaßdie Taschen zu nähen, sowas völlig anderes als ich sonst nähe. Meine Eltern haben sie schon ausprobiert und sagen, sie seien perfekt.

Blauweisschen - erstes Stück genäht

Das ging mal einigermaßen schnell, trotz einiger gesundheitlicher Probleme und den wachsenden Zähnchen der Motte. Das erste Kleid ist schon fertig.

Ich mag diese Kombination auch sehr gerne Madhatter :) und hätte ohne den Farbfächer im Leben nicht daran gedacht, Grün mit Lila zu kombinieren! Da hätte sich in mir einiges gesperrt!

Das Kleid hat am Hals oben kleine Kellerfalten, die ich weniger tief abgesteppt habe, als der Schnitt es eigentlich vorsieht - so gefällt es mir besser, fällt schön in dem durch die Farbe fester gewordenen Stoff.

Am Saum ist ein einfarbiges Stück Stoff aufgesetzt. Ich habe mir nach einigem Rumprobieren für grün entschieden, um auch ein wenig Ruhe in das Kleid zu bringen.

Bei meiner liebsten Kurzwaren-, Stoff- und Nähmaschinenhändlerin Frau Gebhard in Bruchköbel habe ich auch schöne passende Knöpfe gefunden, mit ein ganz bisschen Perlenbärchen in Lila drin, aber trotzdem schön dezent.

Finja hat es auch schon angehabt und ich werde immer mehr überzeugt davon, dass die Kleine ein Sommertyp ist, genau wie ich. Sie sah zuckersüß darin aus. Ist aber noch eine Spur reichlich.

Blauweisschen

Nach einem Jahr habe ich endlich mal wieder Blaudruck gemacht. Der lang ersehnte Kurs in moderner Gestaltung bei Blauweisschen hat am 3. Mai stattgefunden und ich war zusammen mit meiner Mutter fleissig.

Wir haben zwei moderne Gestaltungstechniken kennengelernt, die Wischtechnik, bei der man den Stoff mit einem Schwamm einfärbt (die Farbe aufwischt) und die Spachteltechnik, bei der man die Farbe mit einem na? genau Spachtel aufträgt. Uns hat letztere Technik gefallen, also haben wir beschlossen diese zu benutzen, um Kleiderstoff für meine Motte zu gestalten. Den Stoff haben zwei alte Bettlaken von meiner Uroma hergegeben - schön weich, so oft gewaschen, dass garantiert keine Appretur mehr darin war und gut zu bedrucken und zu färben.

Ich habe mir eine Farbwelt in Lila ausgesucht. Da das allein ziemlich langweilig ist, habe ich noch Lindgrün zugefügt. Klingt seltsam, ist es aber nicht. Sieht ziemlich gut zusammen aus:

Den Spachtel habe ich in relativ langen, geschwungenen Bahnen gezogen, die sich teilweise überlappt haben.

Zum Stoff passend gab es noch ein Tuch mit Hohlsaum, daraus mache ich zwei Kopftücher.

Damit Finja weiß, dass es ihr Tuch ist, steht ihr Name drauf ;)

Meine Mutter wollte eine etwas wildere Farbkombination ausprobieren und hat sie für Pink- und Rosatöne entschieden. Das Ganze aufgepeppt mit Smaragdgrün und in kurzen Strichen aufgetragen sieht etwa so aus:

Um es noch spannender zu machen, hat sie stellenweise den Spachtel geschwungen.

Das Ganze finde ich richtig großartig. Daraus wird es eine coole Pumphose geben und einen passenden Sommerhut. Mal sehen, was ich mit dem Reststoff machen werde. Auch hierzu hat es ein Kopftuch mit Hohlsaum gegeben.

Mein Plan war es, auch noch etwas in Rosa und Blau zu spachteln, das habe ich zeitlich nicht mehr geschafft. Also habe ich in ein paar neue Farben investiert *hüstel* und hoffe, dass ich noch dazu komme, etwas damit zu machen. Ich nutze zur Zeit jede Minute, in der die Kleine schläft um meine kreative Energie auszutoben. Ich hoffe mal, dass es auch demnächst mal Endergebnisse geben wird.

Vivan - Work in Progress 2

Hiho!

Altough slowly, Vivian advances. I knitted only a little during easter, but did something on tuesday. The decreases started in the large front cables so I'm nearly done with my decreases and have to decide where to change the needles to 4.5 mm size.

I'm planning to lenghten the body of the jacket again in the waist as I did for the hip section. So probably I will knit the extra twist in the cables with the smaller sized needles and go on in size 4.5 from there. But I have to knit some until I arrive at this point. I did 45 row as yet.

No pics today - not worth it yet.

Vivan - Work in Progress

Salve! Vivian is growing and I decided to go for a WIP. Why only wip a sewing project? Well.

As I already told you I made the swatch and did five rows.

The original yarn needed 17 stitches and 25 rows per 2". My yarn knit with needle size 5 came to 16 stitches and 23 rows per 2". With a lot of math, help of Tini for the rule of three (rule of thumb in my case...) I figured out which sizes I need to knit.
Thanks to my good luck I can go with only two different sizes and change of needle size after I finished the waist!
And with even more good luck the difference in the two sizes I make are only 8 stitches, so I can include the extra decreases easily in the extra rows I need to lengthen the jacket (American women seem to be rather short-bodied. Every pullover I make from American patterns needs suuuuper much extra length)

Today I knit up to row 27 plus 6 - 6 rows extra length - and started with the decreases. I already arrived at the number of stitches for the smaller size and can now go on for about um 60 rows before I have to change the needle size.

This is the large back cable with the first intercrossing between the two rows of cables.

Next knitting project is finished!

This is the first time ever I started a sweater and finished it during the same month (in the same year) - not only the knitting part but blocking, weaving in ends and sewing as well! Wow.

The yarn used - Sari by Lang Yarns - is a cotton-bamboo blend and knits beautifully. I hope it wears nice as well. It's the first time I knit bamboo yarn.

I had to lengthen the body of the pullover (seems like the ordinary american woman is a little short). Luckily for me the pullover grew during blocking so now it has the perfect length as well as in the body as in the sleeves (which I lengthened as well).
The front pattern was very easily knit and I like the effect but have to say - it's not a bra-friendly pattern. Well. It's a pullover for summer. At first I didn't like the garter stitch ground within the pattern, but it turned out nice, so I didn't frog as I first thought I should do, after I finished the front.

When blocking I already started the next project. When the Winter Issue of TwistCollective was out I instantly fell in love with Vivian.
During my winter holiday I found a beautiful cotton-rayon blend to go with the pattern (intended as a summer jacket, not something for the winter). Three days ago I knit the swatch.

By now five rows are done and I decided to omit the hood and go for a collar, as I tend to find hooded clothes very uncomfortable. I hope to be able to post some pictures soon.

Am I a Knitter? Or a knitter?

Tini lent me one of the books of Yarn Harlot, I suppose it's the first book of Stephanie Pearl-McPhee. There is one story where she says how to recognize a true Knitter by giving them one of your knitted pieces.

The person will either admire the garment, look at the pattern and the fabric. That's the knitter. Or he/ she will look at the garment inside and out to admire the finishing, how the shoulder seams are grafted and how ends are woven in. That's the Knitter (a truly dedicated knitter).

That reminded me of a story I experienced with my grandmother shorty after I started sewing. I made a knee length Skirt of corduroy with a box pleat in the front. I really took my time to make this skirt. I made a lapped zipper in the center back, used Hongkong Finishing on my seams and handsew the hem. I was really really proud of my skirt. My masterpiece then.
Then I showed my skirt to my grandmother (never a Sewer, not even a sewer, she only sewed as a young woman when absolutely necessary).
My granny made me put on the skirt. Then she went around me to see if the hem was straight (it was). She stroke down every seam to see if it puckered and if the grain was perfect or wether I accidentally cut one piece of corduroy the wrong way. (I did not). Then she turned the skirt inside out to see if the seams were finished neatly. And so on and so on. It went for about 10 Minutes.

Afterwards she said: "It's nice."

Okay, we're from Westfalia. I now, at home "It's nice." is high praise! But I was really flabbergasted. I wasn't able to wear the skirt for weeks. I hated it. I was always on the lookout for the mistake she found that made the skirt only "nice".

I never ever turn the handicraft of a person, be it sewn, knitted or crocheted, inside out to "admire" the finishing because of this experience, unless I'm asked to.

Does this deter me from being a Knitter?

(I must admit, I didn't think of this episode for years, although I never showed my grandmother anything made by me again. The story brought it back vividly. Strange ideed.)

Change of scenery

Ich habe beschlossen, dass ich mein Schriftenglisch üben muss - also werde ich diesen Blog jetzt auf die englische Sprache umstellen. Denn wer nicht übt, verlernt, gell?

This weekend my friend Tini and her husband visited us. We didn't meet for a year so this was quite a special occasion and required new knitting projects, good food, a baby girl dressed in a dress and sunshine.

We had a marvelous time. Trying to seperate the five strands of yarn from a cone to create lace weight yarn turned out to be quite, um, unmanageable but still we passed Saturday morning quite cheerfully trying. We actually managed to get two skeins of lace weight but trying to sepearte the remaining three strands into another lace was not that good an idea. we quit after two hours of trying, cussing and cussing more. Afterwards we went on a walk with the baby (not in a dress anymore).

Tini brought her "Knitting Nature" by Norah Gaughan for me to have a look at and this certainly made me want to have it for myself (she left it to enforce this urge) I avenged this perfidy by showing her my "Best of Interweave Knits" and my "Knitted Lace of Estonia" and created an equal need to buy one of these books in her. I love how we match in our taste for patterns.

This mornig they left again for their holiday and I must admit - I could easily adapt to seeing Tini twice a week for a nice knit-in. I guess I have to move.

Ah - the new knitting project. Cabaret Raglan (Link to Ravelry) by Norah Gaughan made from Lang Sari (Bamboo and Cotton Blend) in a nice muted blueish green color. Back's nearly finished and I'm looking forward to knit the front with this nice lace pattern.

Postscript: We only had sunshine on Saturday morning. Indeed it rained on Sunday although the weather forecast told differently. Well. At least it didn't rain while we visited the zoo.
